OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to Franky Carrillo, candidate for AD-52, selling thousands of industry investments in oil stocks after claiming he was not aware he held these stocks, despite these industries representing potentially 10% of his net worth.
Statement from Veda Banerjee, Communications Director, California Environmental Voters:
“We condemn Carrillo for his substantial investments in oil, tobacco, and coal that he claims to have sold only after these holdings became a campaign issue. If he has truly divested from these industries, the timing raises serious questions about accountability and transparency. Carrillo’s most recent Statement of Economic Interests as of June 11th still lists him having up to $820,000 in oil, coal, and tobacco holdings and he could provide evidence of divesting, if that indeed is the case. Claiming ignorance of such significant financial interests while touting himself as a climate leader is difficult to reconcile, especially in a time when transparency in leadership is critical.
It’s alarming that Carrillo not only delayed disclosing these investments but also used funds from polluting industries to largely self-finance his campaign, which casts doubt on his commitment to tackling the climate crisis. This should serve as a strong reminder that Jessica Caloza is the right candidate to represent AD-52.”
