LOS ANGELES, CA— In recognition of his decades-long dedication to fighting for a clean energy future, today Rick Chavez Zbur earned the endorsement of the California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters), one of California’s most influential environmental groups and the political arm of the state’s environmental movement, in his campaign for the 50th State Assembly District. A leading environmental lawyer and advocate for bold action to address our climate crisis, Zbur served on EnviroVoters’ board of directors for over two decades and as President & Chair of EnviroVoters for six of those years. Zbur currently serves on the board of the California Environmental Voters Education Fund, an affiliate of EnviroVoters, and in that role was not part the organization’s decision-making process.

In making public its endorsement, California Environmental Voters CEO Mary Creasman released the following statement:

“The California Environmental Voters is proud to announce our strong support for Rick Chavez Zbur for Assembly because he is a proven champion in the fight against climate change and he understands the dire need to prioritize equity and environmental justice. At a time when we face extreme droughts and wildfires throughout the state, it’s critical that we send leaders to Sacramento who are willing to take bold action that our climate crisis demands. For decades, Rick has been a force for climate action, and we’re thrilled to endorse his campaign.”

EnviroVoters Political & Organizing Director Mike Young also released the following statement:

“We are proud to endorse a true environmental champion in Rick Chavez Zbur — our longtime friend and former President — and his bid for State Assembly District 50. Throughout his time leading EnviroVoters’ board, Rick demonstrated an unmatched ability to bring people together to pass critical environmental policy, including banning harmful substances that damage our air and water, combatting the weakening of CEQA and other environmental laws, protecting California’s coastline, advancing equity for all Californians and developing a comprehensive strategy that moves California to a 100% renewable energy future. We know Rick will be an environmental and climate champion in the State Legislature and we’re honored to endorse his campaign.”

Zbur also released the following statement reflecting on the announced endorsement:

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to have the endorsement of the California Environmental Voters, an organization that I care deeply about and have devoted so much of my community service to. My work with EnviroVoters and environmental leaders across California has given me an important perspective and drive that I will bring to Sacramento to tackle our climate crisis and ensure the communities hit hardest by climate change have access to clean air and clean water. And I will always fight to ensure our bold climate action creates jobs, advances equity and justice and uplifts and empowers working people across California. In the Assembly, I look forward to continuing to partner with EnviroVoters in the fight to combat climate change and save our planet for future generations.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
