SACRAMENTO, CA – California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) today issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling on West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters:

“Today, the Court has decided to hamstring the federal government’s ability to regulate carbon emissions from fossil-fuel-burning power plants. They are taking away the EPA’s ability to do its job in the midst of a climate crisis. This is one more blow from a reactionary activist court that has already gone after reproductive rights and gun safety and continues to target voting rights. They are bulldozing into the territory of legislating, taking that power away from Congress.

“The majority of justices on the Court right now were appointed by presidents who didn’t win the popular vote. They were confirmed by Senators who represent a minority of Americans. Their rise to the Court was supported by dark money institutions invested in corporate polluters. They are unaccountable to voters and dedicated solely to executing an extreme right wing and corporate polluter agenda against the will of the vast majority of Americans.

“The Supreme Court is the least democratic federal institution and the most aggressive in trying to dismantle our democracy. The rulings by our current Court have been designed to cripple government to the point where it can no longer hold corporate polluters accountable and weaken democracy to the point where the majority’s will can be easily ignored without consequence by a corrupt and insular few. Their actions are catastrophic for our country and even more disastrous to our ability to solve the climate crisis.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
