OAKLAND, CA — Recent polling conducted by California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) and Change Research show that Californians are significantly interested in protecting several high-priority issues the Farm Bill funds. If Congress fails to reauthorize a Farm Bill that protects existing programs, Californians will lose access to the benefits of promoting sustainable agriculture, easier access to fresh produce, clean water and overall health of our communities.
“Voters statewide are calling for the government to prioritize investing in water conservation, renewable agriculture, sustainable food, and a greener future, which are all key components of the Farm Bill, and are at risk of reallocation, in an attempt by MAGA Republicans to strip climate guardrails from USDA conservation programs to align with their climate-denying ideology,” said Aaron McCall, Federal Advocacy Coordinator, EnviroVoters. “The Republican majority’s attempt to dismantle the requirements for climate-smart agricultural practices and investments in nutrition programs actively undermines programs that benefit American farmers while enabling them to make contributions to solving the climate crisis. But in addition to flagrantly jeopardizing the health, safety, and livelihoods at greater risk by failing to address the climate crisis, any Californian legislator who does vote for this current version of the Farm Bill will be in direct opposition to their constituents top concerns regardless of that voter’s party affiliation.”
Across demographics, a majority of voters say they would be concerned if Congress made funding cuts to a variety of programs:
– Combating wildfires (90%)
– Clean water programs (87%)
– National parks (86%)
– School lunches (81%)
– Resources and assistance to underrepresented farmers (77%)
And the following environmental issues:
– Cost of groceries (96%)
– Water contamination (91%)
– Wildfires (90%)
– Cost of water bills (85%)
– Water conservation (84%)
