SACRAMENTO, CA – Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer of the California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters), released the following statement in response to the climate provisions included in the budget agreement announced by state legislative leadership yesterday.

“While details of the legislature’s $21 billion climate budget agreement are still being negotiated, it’s clear this level of investment won’t prevent our children from inheriting a state plagued by even more deadly drought, wildfires, and heat waves.

“We have a record budget surplus now, the know-how to fight climate change, and a brief window of time to get this right. Scientists tell us we have until the end of this decade before California reaches a point of no return. The governor and lawmakers must choose to make bold and massive investments in clean energy and transportation, water, and other vital infrastructure now. We need at least $75 billion committed to climate leadership over the next five years or 5 percent of our state budget. Anything less won’t credibly confront this existential challenge.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
