SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, the California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on Nancy Pelosi stepping down as Speaker of the House. Although she will not seek re-election to the Democratic Party leadership, she will continue to serve as representative for California’s 12th district.

Statement from Mary Creasman, CEO, California Environmental Voters:

“After two incredible decades of party leadership, Speaker Pelosi leaves a legacy behind her. She is the prime example of strong and consistent leadership for California and the rest of the country. Put simply, Nancy Pelosi is the most effective speaker in modern history.

Central to her tenure in leadership is tenacity. Like a true California climate champion, Pelosi fought valiantly for the country and delivered even in the face of opposition. From fighting the climate crisis to working towards ending Big Oil tax breaks, protecting public lands, and preserving environmental safeguards, Pelosi is stepping down with incredible accomplishment.

As the first woman to hold this role, she played a critical part in recruiting and electing the most diverse Congress we’ve ever seen, ushering in 2018’s Blue Wave. She is the most pro-climate and pro-environmental speaker the House has yet to see and it is because of her leadership that we have been able to pass critical clean energy investments. We are grateful for her vision and tenacity in the fight for the biggest climate bill in history – the Inflation Reduction Act.

Pelosi’s role in shaping the country and strong climate action will reverberate through the House for generations. As we reflect on how powerful Speaker Pelosi’s leadership has been, we also look forward with excitement to the new generation of leaders in the Democratic Party who are challenging the status quo and changing what is possible.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
