SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, the California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement on the current election results. Californians overwhelmingly voted for candidates who promised to protect our climate future.
Statement from Mary Creasman, CEO, California Environmental Voters:
“We are proud to have partnered with progressives to take corporate polluters head on and ensure Big Oil continued their losing streak this election cycle. We took home big wins on our priority climate slate, winning 10 of the 16 races that have been called. EnviroVoters was successful in electing champions for clean air and public health from the United States Congress to the California Senate and Assembly.
In Bay Area battleground districts, pro-climate justice candidates Liz Ortega-Toro (AD-20) and Aisha Wahab (SD-10) beat out corporate-funded Democrats for the future of California politics. There’s no question whether the State Legislature will be more progressive next year. And with the historic progress California made on climate action this year, we are looking forward to these leaders doubling down on the movement.
The most significant election night victories for climate include Caroline Menjivar (SD-20) for State Senate and Lindsey Horvath for L.A. County Supervisor. Defeat of their opponents, Bob and Daniel Hertzberg, is a testament to voters’ enthusiasm to hold corporate polluter-backed Democrats accountable. Oil money is toxic and the Hertzbergs’ loss is proof.
Despite being at the center of the race for the House, the Golden State did not receive the resources necessary to flip a single congressional seat. California’s prioritization in national elections is imperative to achieving a climate majority and there’s no coincidence that these California races were the last to be called across the country.
Overall, environmental voters in California made it clear that climate champions get elected and accepting oil money is a losing strategy. We have to ensure that these electoral wins become even bigger and bolder legislative wins as we welcome a more climate-focused State Senate and Assembly. The success of so many pro-climate candidates demonstrates Californians’ commitment to our climate, our public health, and our future.”
