SACRAMENTO – The California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Governor’s May Revision of the 2021-2022 state budget proposal.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters:

“Governor Newsom’s May Revision budget proposal is beginning to look like the level of investment our state needs to achieve a green and just recovery. California’s budget process has been a historically underused investment tool in preparing for what’s happening and protecting our future in the fight against the climate crisis.

Time is not on our side as Californians have been grappling with the devastating impacts of pollution and climate change. The markers the Governor is putting down with these significant and broad investments are the beginnings of a real vision for a climate just future. This budget proposal shows an important focus on resilience and equitable access for all communities, reducing water and air pollution, and designing an integrated approach to jobs, equity, health, and climate. We are extremely encouraged by the direction and vision laid out in the proposal, but these numbers need to grow and the policies around them need to ensure equitable implementation. We look forward to working with the Administration and the Legislature to continue to raise our sights around this plan to build back bolder and more equitably.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
