SACRAMENTO – The California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement on Friday, July 9, directing California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Public Utility Commission (PUC) to map out a path to carbon neutrality to 2035. This would create a plan for California to achieve this goal ten years earlier than Governor Brown’s 2018 executive order’s deadline for 2045.

Friday’s announcement follows Governor Newsom’s April announcement to halt new fracking permits after 2024 and the September 2020 executive order to reduce demand for fossil fuels by accelerating California’s transition away from gasoline-powered cars and trucks.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters:

“We applaud Governor Newsom for pushing state agencies to accelerate our work towards carbon neutrality. Our worsening, heat, drought, and wildfires show us clearly that we need to be moving faster, and this action is an encouraging additional step in that direction.

Creating a path to carbon neutrality by 2035 is just the beginning of what’s necessary to transition away from fossil fuels. We look forward to working with the governor and the state legislature to move towards a clean energy future, ensure a thoughtful workforce transition, and create a roadmap for global climate action.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
