OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) mourns the loss of Dolores Huerta, who passed away October 28, 2026. Co-founder of the United Farm Workers (UFW) and a monumental figure in the environmental justice movement, Huerta was a fierce leader who spent her life fighting for the rights and safety of Californians.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“Dolores Huerta is a matriarch of the climate movement and so many other movements. Time and time again, she changed what’s possible with her vision, hard work, and personal sacrifice. She was a tremendous partner in our fight for climate justice, pushing our state to address the intersectional issues of health, environmental, racial, gender, and economic justice. Just this year, she stood with us in the fight to hold corporate polluters accountable for the economic crisis threatening California families. Her legacy and light strengthens our work and calls us all to lead with courage, conviction, and an unwavering commitment to justice. We join the world in grieving and celebrating the once-in-a-generation force of nature that is Dolores Huerta.”
