OAKLAND, CA – The California California Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the Environmental Protect Agency’s (EPA) move to reinstate California’s authority to set stricter climate standards for vehicles.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters:

“We thank the Biden administration and EPA Director Michael Regan for reinstating California’s authority to set stricter standards for vehicle emissions. It is critical that states and local jurisdictions have support from the federal government to move the dial the dial on the climate crisis and push the envelope in hope of a better future.

Make no mistake: this climate move was made possible by our country electing leaders who prioritize climate action. Today is a reminder of the role elections play in shaping policy and how with the right leadership, our government can use every tool available to ensure our economy and the corporations who drive our economy change as quickly as possible. This domestic announcement follows President Biden’s climate summit just last week where the administration encouraged other nations around the world to ramp up their commitments to tacking climate change.

If we are to prevent major climate catastrophe, this victory can’t be the end. California has the chance to lead the way and collaborate at a national level again to set the standards for tailpipe emissions that is ultimately beneficial to all.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
