SACRAMENTO, CA – California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement today in response to the Governor’s proposed budget.

Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“We applaud Governor Newsom for raising the bar with his proposed budget on how we approach the climate crisis holistically and for increasing the state’s overall focus on this urgent crisis.

These are beginning to be the numbers we need to see in California to take this crisis seriously. It should be exciting to all of us that we are starting to see the urgency of the climate crisis reflected in our state budget.

This proposal also increases the state’s integration of climate mitigation and adaptation into all other sectors to address what’s already happening and protect us from the worst impacts of climate change.

Looking ahead, we know that we need these investments to be frontloaded. We need the boldest and most integrated efforts now to make sure we have achieved the progress that is scientifically necessary by 2030.

In the coming months, there will be areas where we will be focusing our time and attention – and hope that the Governor and members of the Legislature will do so as well. This includes:

  • Identifying a robust and aggressive target for building decarbonization as a top source of carbon emissions. And any new housing construction should mandate adaptation and building decarbonization moving forward.
  • Ensuring that any clean energy initiatives that receive public funding create family sustaining, union jobs.
  • Working to make sure that these programs are designed to be implemented in an equitable way to advance justice, create good union jobs, and ensure access to clean air.
  • Growing our investment in resiliency in order to meet the State’s ambitious and necessary conservation goals.

We celebrate the holistic health, jobs, and equity-focused approach to this proposed budget. Now, we must all work to make sure that the details and scale of these investments end up as bold, aggressive, and equitable as ever for all Californians.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
