April 20, 2016 (Oakland, CA) — “It’s outrageous and offensive that Chevron, one of California’s worst polluters and a company that has poured millions of dollars into opposing essentially every major climate bill proposed in California, could try to pass itself off as an expert on which candidates for the state legislature are environmental champions. The fact that Chevron and other special interests are paying for in-district mail lauding Assemblymember Cheryl Brown’s less-than-exemplary environmental credentials is an insult to actual environmental justice champions who worked to pass the bills listed on this mailer.

“Let’s set the record straight: Cheryl Brown worked to weaken climate bill SB 350, refusing to support the bill until a component requiring a 50% reduction in petroleum usage was removed. She abstained on another important climate bill (SB 32, Pavley), and on a bill to divest California from dirty coal (Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León’s SB 185) and voted no on a bill to protect our water supplies from waste from oil operations (AB 356, Williams). As a result, she scored 73% on CLCV’s most recent Environmental Scorecard.

“CLCV has endorsed a true environmental champion in the AD 47 race, Eloise Reyes, who is committed to standing up for a clean environment and thriving clean energy jobs for Inland Empire communities.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
