California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) Announces Endorsement of California Attorney General Kamala Harris for United States Senate

Los Angeles, Calif. – Today, the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) – the non-partisan political action arm of the environmental movement in California – announced its endorsement for California Attorney General Kamala Harris for Senator.

“Californians deserve a committed environmental champion in the Senate seat that has been held by Barbara Boxer for more than two decades. Today, we are proud to say the clear environmental choice for Senate is Attorney General Kamala Harris,” said James Johnson Jr., Political Director of the California League of Conservation Voters.

“As Attorney General, Kamala Harris has been a champion for environmental protection and has won justice for communities harmed by polluters,” said Sarah Rose, CEO of CLCV. “Having completed a thorough evaluation of and endorsement process with the candidates for U.S. Senate, we’re confident that Kamala Harris will prioritize and defend policies that protect our air, water, and land while lifting up all of California’s communities.”

Harris has a long record of environmental achievement. Attorney General Harris has defended California’s landmark climate laws against attacks by the oil industry and other states, and filed criminal charges against Plains All American when their oil spill caused 120,000 gallons of crude oil to pollute the California coast. As Attorney General, Harris has fought and won several key environmental legal battles including a lawsuit to reduce diesel truck pollution in the Port of Long Beach and a lawsuit in San Diego requiring revisions to a development plan that incentivized freeway construction over alternatives that could improve public health.

In 2011, Harris received the CLCV Environmental Leadership Award in part because of her work in a lawsuit to hold a metal factory in Mira Loma accountable for their run-off, which was harming the surrounding community.

Harris’ opponent recently said she would be open to weakening key environmental protections in the Endangered Species Act if she is elected to the U.S. Senate.

Kamala Harris previously served as a District Attorney in San Francisco, where she created the first division in the county focused on environmental justice and economically poor communities who disproportionately suffer from pollution.

“As U.S. Senator for California, Kamala Harris will continue to demonstrate what is environmentally possible and attainable for the United States and other countries around the world,” said Johnson. “For Californians who care about our environment, climate change and standing up to polluters, the choice is clear: Kamala Harris for Senate.”

“I’m honored to have the support of the California League of Conservation Voters,” said Harris. “California’s climate and environmental protections are a model for the nation, and by working together, we can bring California’s bold environmental leadership to Washington.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
