Press Release
March 7, 2011
The Honorable Jerry Brown, Governor
The Honorable Darrell Steinberg, Senate President pro Tem
The Honorable John A. Pérez, Assembly Speaker
SUBJECT: Protect CEQA and Environmental Laws in the State Budget Process
Dear Governor Brown, Senator Steinberg and Assemblymember Pérez:
The organizations shown above strongly urge you to reject any proposed concessions to the public health, safety and environmental safeguards in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and other environmental laws in the budget adoption process.
California has a thorough and transparent legislative and regulatory review process through the existing legislative Policy and oversight committees as well as the regulatory agencies themselves. We are most concerned that the State’s dire fiscal condition will encourage detractors of our environmental programs to propose concessions to weaken CEQA and other environmental protections during the budget process.
We urge you to insist that any proposals that reform regulations or undermine our cornerstone environmental protections be assigned to the appropriate policy or budget subcommittees for full and open discussion and action.
Thank you for your leadership in these matters.
ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
