LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement Secretary of the Interior Haaland and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Director Stone-Manning visiting Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument yesterday.

This follows Representatives John Garamendi and Mike Thompson and Senators Alex Padilla and Dianne Feinstein sending the President a letter urging him to use the Antiquities Act to expand Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. The expansion of Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument would safeguard Molok Luyuk, public lands that are sacred to the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation

Statement from Mike Young, Political & Organizing Director, California Environmental Voters:

“Expanding Berryessa is necessary to safeguard sites of cultural and historic significance, biodiversity, and green spaces for all Californians. We thank Secretary Haaland and Director Stone-Manning for their visit and interest in hearing from Tribal and local communities on the importance of Molok Luyuk.

Protecting these public lands is a perfect opportunity to move closer toward the President’s commitment to conserve 30% of America’s wild spaces by 2030 as part of the 30×30 goals. As a habitat for countless plants and wildlife, the national monument is critical to preserving biodiversity in the face of a changing climate.

We look forward to the President responding to local communities that are seeking his help to expand Berryessa Snow Mountain.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
