SACRAMENTO, CA — California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) issued the following statement in response to the Biden Administration greenlighting repairs on the California pipeline responsible for the Amplify Energy disaster that released an estimated 25,000 gallons of crude oil into the shores of Huntington Beach and Newport Beach, washing as far as Mexico. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a permit authorizing Amplify Energy to repair the pipeline. The corporation hopes to resume drilling in early 2023 if the repairs pass federal inspections.
Statement from Mike Young, Political and Organizing Director, EnviroVoters:
“A year ago we were viscerally reminded of the consequences of fossil fuel dependency. The Amplify oil spill affected the local economy, the environment, wildlife and forced fishery and beach closures. Our energy challenge is a crisis of choice and without action this is the price we will pay for generations to come. Dirty power continues to undermine our climate efforts and submits our frontline communities to bear the brunt of climate cowardice.
It is deeply disappointing that the Biden Administration would approve any work on this dangerous pipeline, inviting more disasters to the shores Californians love and enjoy. We must terminate offshore drilling and seize every opportunity to transition to clean, renewable energy. With less than a decade left to address the climate crisis, action is urgently needed.”
ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
