SACRAMENTO, CA – The California Environmental Voters Education Fund (EnviroVoters Ed Fund) announced today that California State Assemblymember Ash Kalra (CA-27) will join the organization’s Board of Directors. The EnviroVoters Ed Fund fights for equity and justice for all Californians, from voting rights to clean air and water. Since 1996, the organization has worked to make government, policy, and voting accessible by conducting public opinion research, shaping the public narrative, organizing with allies and local communities, and educating legislators on pressing environmental issues.

“I am honored to join the EnviroVoters Ed Fund Board of Directors, particularly at a time when our state needs to deepen its commitment to fighting the climate crisis,” said Assemblymember Kalra. “For many years, EnviroVoters have been strong advocates for the environment and excellent identifiers of innovative climate policy. I look forward to furthering our partnership and working together to increase voter turnout, improve the state’s environmental and conservation policies, and protect the beautiful land that we call home.”

Assemblymember Kalra brings a long-standing track record on climate and environmental justice issues to the EnviroVoters Ed Fund Board. The Assemblymember received an “A” in EnviroVoters’ 2020 California Environmental Scorecard and was named a member of the organization’s 2020 Climate Action Caucus. The California Environmental Scorecard is a comprehensive analysis of where the state’s leaders stand on the environment and climate change.

“Assemblymember Kalra is one of California’s most focused and uncompromising climate champions and we are thrilled he’s joining the EnviroVoters Ed Fund Board,” said Mary Creasman, CEO of EnviroVoters Ed Fund. “We’re eager to continue working together to push for bold climate action from the state, including protecting clean air and clean water and promoting climate justice for all Californians.”

Notably, Assemblymember Kalra recently championed AB 3030, which called to protect 30% of California’s lands and waters by 2030. This effort led to Governor Newsom’s 2020 Executive Order calling for these same protections, and helped catalyze President Biden’s subsequent 2021 Executive Order to protect at least 30% of our nation’s lands and waters by 2030.

Assemblymember Kalra also led passage of AB 35 (requires the California Department of Public Health to report worker lead poisoning cases), AB 59 (helps increase voting access for college students), and AB 948 (protects important natural lands in the Santa Clara Valley as the Coyote Valley Conservation Program).

ABOUT ASSEMBLYMEMBER ASH KALRA, DISTRICT 27
Assemblymember Ash Kalra was first elected to the California Legislature in 2016, representing the 27th District, which encompasses approximately half of San Jose and includes all of downtown. In 2020, he was re-elected to his third term. Assemblymember Kalra is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Labor and Employment and also currently serves as a member on the committees on Housing and Community Development, Judiciary, Transportation, and Water, Parks, and Wildlife. Assemblymember Kalra has established himself as a leader on issues ranging from criminal justice reform to the environment, as well as health care sustainability, housing affordability, growing our transportation infrastructure, and expanding economic opportunity to all Californians. Assemblymember Kalra previously served as a San José City Councilmember for eight years and was a deputy public defender in Santa Clara County for 11 years prior to the City Council. He is the first Indian-American to serve in the California Legislature in state history.
