LOS ANGELES, CA – California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti nominating Councilmember Nithya Raman to the South Coast Air Quality Management District Governing Board.

Statement from Resa Barillas, Inland Empire Regional Organizer, California Environmental Voters:

“We appreciate Mayor Garcetti’s insight and support for clean air leadership as exemplified by this critical appointment. It is good news that Councilmember Nithya Raman will be joining the South Coast Air Quality Management District Governing Board. This District has the immense responsibility of regulating air quality for nearly 17 million Southern Californians, and it has not done enough over the years to ensure that local communities have clean air to breathe.

The appointment of Councilmember Raman is a literal breath of fresh air compared to the lack of leadership from the City of LA’s previous representative on the board. We appreciate that Councilmember Raman is attuned to the challenges that communities face in the region from toxic industries. We are eager to have her advocating for solutions to environmental injustices and the region’s persistent air quality challenges.

The defeat of SB 342, a bill that would have reformed the South Coast Air Quality Management District, was a set-back for California. We should be deeply concerned about the Senate’s failure to hold polluters accountable. Given this defeat, it is all the more important that we have strong voices like Councilmember Nithya Raman at the table pushing for change.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
