“On behalf of our more than one million members and supporters, we ask President Obama to permanently protect the Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow, and Castle Mountains by designating these public lands as national monuments.

“Our members have joined a movement of local families, business owners, community leaders, environmentalists, and elected officials asking the President to use his authority under the Antiquities Act to protect the Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow, and Castle Mountains as national monuments. The California desert is one of the most unique and pristine places in the country, and visitors the world over have long been drawn to its stark striking beauty, painted mountains, fascinating unique wildlife, Native American petroglyphs, inspirational vistas and storied history. These sites feature unparalleled scenery, making tourism and recreation an essential part of the region’s economy, and providing critical habitat for a healthy desert ecosystem. It is imperative that they be safeguarded and cared for to the high standard that they deserve.

“Senator Dianne Feinstein has attempted for several years to move legislation that would offer protections for these areas, but Congressional gridlock has stopped the proposals from moving forward. At this time, it appears unlikely that Congress will move forward on proposed legislation that would accomplish the same goal, although we are also supportive of federal legislation introduced by Senator Feinstein.

“Today, CLCV staff attended a public meeting in Whitewater hosted by Senator Feinstein, along with hundreds of other attendees who were overwhelmingly supportive of permanently protecting the region. Many local residents testified in support of national monument status. We echo their call to President Obama to use his authority to designate the Mojave Trails, Sand to Snow, and Castle Mountains as national monuments and permanently protect these public lands so that all Americans will be able to enjoy them for generations to come.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
