SACRAMENTO, CA – California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) today issued the following statement in response to President Biden signing the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 into law.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters:

“The Inflation Reduction Act is a serious down payment towards tackling the climate crisis and addressing the greatest challenge of our time.

“It will help reduce air pollution and help prevent wildfires. It will spur investments in clean energy and energy efficiency projects, particularly in communities that have been hardest hit by climate change. It will encourage the purchase of domestically produced electric vehicles and batteries, helping to create jobs in the United States. It will help address the restoration of California’s coastline and much, much more. It is a historic achievement.

“We would not be celebrating this moment without the work of our California champions including Senator Alex Padilla, Representatives Katie Porter, Mike Levin, Jared Huffman, Alan Lowenthal, Nanette Barragán, Barbara Lee, and Ted Lieu.

“This law proves that big change is still achievable at the federal level and that elections matter. All of the hard work that was done by activists and advocates and voters to bring climate leadership to Washington, D.C. in the 2020 election cycle made this possible.

“Now, we need California and other states to step up, match this investment, and go even further to help us reach our climate goals. We need every tool in the toolbox – and every possible revenue source – to solve the climate crisis.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
