OAKLAND, CA — Californians are struggling with an affordability crisis driven by the climate crisis increasing energy, insurance, food, and housing costs. Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) launched an accountability campaign to make sure voters know which lawmakers voted to advance solutions to the statewide insurance affordability crisis and which sided with corporate polluters.
The campaign is spotlighting legislators’ votes on Senate Bill 222, which would have created a pathway for Californians to recover climate disaster-related losses from oil and gas companies that knowingly misled the public about the harm their pollution would cause. Legislators failed to provide amendments and advance a solution in its first committee hearing, leaving working families to foot the bill.
The campaign will send mailers across the state thanking legislators who voted to move the bill forward for standing up to Big Oil and protecting Californians and calling out those who voted to stall it for shielding corporate polluters while families shoulder the price.
“Every time an insurance premium spikes because of unnatural disasters, Californians are paying for Big Oil’s hidden fee,” said Mike Young, Executive Director, EnviroVoters. “SB 222 was about making fossil fuel companies pay their fair share instead of forcing working families to choose between rebuilding their lives and keeping up with their housing and food costs. Lawmakers who killed the bill this year by failing to advance it just kicked the can down the road on a growing insurance crisis that is a tipping point for an economic crisis.”
Mailers will hit households this week, putting lawmakers’ climate and cost-of-living records in front of their constituents.
