ENVIROVOTERS STATEMENT ON INAUGURATION OF BIDEN ADMINISTRATION
Oakland, CA – The California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement regarding tomorrow’s inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, EnviroVoters:
“Tomorrow, Joe Biden will be sworn in as President. This is the start of a new chapter – one in which we must focus on bold and just solutions to the climate crisis as well as repairing all the environmental damage that was done by the last administration.
It’s also a truly historic moment with California’s own Kamala Harris being sworn in as Vice President – the first woman, the first Black woman, and the first Indian American woman to hold the position.
It will be essential for the Biden Administration to take swift action after the inauguration, including rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement, canceling the Keystone XL pipeline permit, halting federal oil and gas leases, committing to protecting our public lands and waters, addressing the need for better forest management and wildfire prevention, and rebuilding our economy by advancing clean energy and resilience.
But this transition of power also holds an important call to action for California. National policy change happens by scaling successful local and state models. California has to move rapidly to advance policy solutions that solve the climate crisis, create a more just future, and create the roadmap for the nation.
When California acts, it changes global markets, creates new benchmarks nationally and redefines what’s possible on the journey to our 2030 climate deadline. We have to implement the solutions and export them nationally.”
ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS
California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
