OAKLAND – The California Environmental Voters Education (EnviroVoters) Fund today announced the launch of this year’s Earth Day campaign, which highlights California’s new congressional members and their dedication to protecting public lands. The campaign features first-term members of Congress Representatives Josh Harder (CA-10), T.J. Cox (CA-21), Gil Cisneros (CA-39), Katie Porter (CA-45), Harley Rouda (CA-48), and Mike Levin (CA-49).
In preparation for Earth Day, EnviroVoters Ed Fund invested in print and digital advertisements in Northern and Southern California, applauding the leadership of California’s new congressional members when it comes to critical public land protections.
“Amid the COVID-19 crisis, Californians are staying home to protect the health of our communities, but on this Earth Day, our appreciation for public lands couldn’t be stronger,” said Mike Young, EnviroVoters; Political and Organizing Director. “We are living unprecedented times and more than ever we are thankful for a new generation of leaders who believe in science and value the importance of our public lands.”
California is rich with public lands that serve as an escape from everyday life for many. California’s public lands also protect wildlife habitat, help combat climate change by sequestering carbon emissions, and are important drivers for regional economies across the state. California’s parks, beaches, and public lands have benefited from $2.5 billion from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) over the past half century. This includes places like the Lake Tahoe Basin, the Anza Borrego Desert, and Huntington State Beach. Right now, Congress has the chance to permanently fund LWCF.
Recently, the U.S House of Representatives passed the Protecting America’s Wilderness Act. This legislation will protect more than a million acres of public lands and more than 584 miles of rivers in California. The legislation would protect old-growth redwood forests in Northwest California, designate a 400-mile long National Scenic Trail along the Central Coast, and conserve important habitat for mountain lions, bobcats, and golden eagles in Southern California. California’s freshmen representatives featured in this campaign voted in favor of the bill.
