DAVE MIN’S ELECTION TO STATE SENATE IS CLIMATE VICTORY
Senator Moorlach’s Defeat is a Blow to Big Oil in California
Orange County, CA – Today, the California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) celebrated the election of Dave Min to represent the 37th State Senate District in Orange County. Dave Min, a UC Irvine law professor and advocate for policies to address the climate crisis, defeated incumbent Senator John Moorlach, a climate change denier with one of the worst environmental voting records in the Senate.
Senator Moorlach has a 10% lifetime score on EnviroVoters’ California Environmental Scorecard and does not accept the science proving that climate change is caused by human activities. Big Oil spent approximately $75,000 in support of his campaign but came up short.
“This is a victory for Orange County residents,” said Mike Young, Envirovoters’ Political Director. “For too long, this area was represented by someone who consistently sided with Big Oil and voted against the environment. But people in these communities care about the environment, particularly coastal protections. They made it clear that they want a representative who will be a bold advocate for climate justice.”
This year, EnviroVoters named Moorlach to their “Rollback Six” list that highlights legislators who have ties to special interests and are working against the environment and against public health with reckless rollbacks. The national League of Conservation Voters also named Moorlach to their “Dirty Dozen in the States” list, only the second Californian in history to be given this dubious recognition. That list is a national compilation of the worst environmental candidates at the state and local level.
In contrast to his opponent, Dave Min campaigned on the need to act on climate change. He supports the Green New Deal and achieving carbon neutrality through a 100% clean energy supply and the electrification of building and transportation systems. He advocates for the need to focus on vulnerable communities during this transition.
“With just nine years left to address the worst impacts of climate change, electing leaders like Dave Min is critical,” continued Mike Young. “We are looking forward to working with Senator-elect Min on bold action to address the climate crisis.”
