CLCV Scorecard Reveals Strong Environmental Progress in California
Oakland, CA – The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV), the political arm of the environmental movement in California, announced today the release of its annual California Environmental Scorecard. The Scorecard reveals how members of the state legislature and Governor Jerry Brown performed in 2017 on the most important environmental and public health bills.
Members of the California legislature were graded for the 2017 scorecard on their responses to 22 pieces of key legislation, then given a percentage score for their pro-environmental actions. This year 22 legislators — including 5 state senators and 17 state Assembly members received a perfect score of 100 percent. Governor Jerry Brown scored 82%, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon scored 94%, and Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de León scored 95%.
“Sacramento legislators demonstrated once again that California will continue breaking ground on moving environmental policy forward, despite the Trump Administration’s attacks. This year’s scorecard recognizes the champions leading the fight,” said Rebecca Saltzman, Interim Executive Director of CLCV.
President Trump and the pro-polluter majority in Congress continue to work to gut our environmental protections, to open our public lands to drilling, and to dismantle the EPA itself. This session California lawmakers demonstrated they won’t only defend the progress we’ve made, but that they will continue to enact bold new policies.
2017 was an impressive year in Sacramento, due in large part to the climate leadership and perseverance of environmental champions scoring high on the CLCV Scorecard. Legislators receiving a perfect score include Senators Ben Allen, Jim Beall, Holly Mitchell, Nancy Skinner, Scott Wiener; and Assemblymembers Marc Berman, Richard Bloom, Rob Bonta, David Chiu, Susan Eggman, Laura Friedman, Todd Gloria, Jimmy Gomez, Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, Ash Kalra, Kevin McCarty, Adrin Nazarian, Bill Quirk, Tony Thurmond, Phil Ting, Shirley Weber, Jim Wood.
These and other state leaders passed legislation in Sacramento mandating accurate disclosure of political spending, requiring labeling of ingredients in cleaning products, investing in our parks and public transportation systems, and addressing air pollution and climate change.
Environmental Victories in Sacramento
More than a dozen priority bills were signed into law in 2017, setting into motion long-term reductions to greenhouse gas emissions, groundbreaking consumer protections, and meaningful investments in our parks and public transportation systems.
“This year, California’s lawmakers did far more than simply resist attacks from the federal administration on our environmental protections,” said Andy Kelley, Communications Director of CLCV. “We advanced groundbreaking disclosure requirements for cleaning products to ensure consumer safety, committed our state to considering the impact on climate change in the materials we source, and advanced legislation to improve air quality as we work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
