AB 1866
Idle Oil Well Cleanup
Idle and abandoned oil wells pose a tremendous challenge to the well-being of local communities and taxpayers. This bill is a much-needed overhaul to the state’s existing idle well clean-up requirements. Current law allows oil companies to pay a tiny fee to avoid plugging their wells. Instead, this bill would incentivize all companies to start plugging significant portions of their wells every year. The largest producers, like Chevron, would be incentivized to clean up 15% of their idle wells each year.
