2024 California General Election Voter Guide

This guide has everything you need to know about deadlines, registration resources, and submitting your ballot for the 2024 California General Election. As part of the universal mail-in voting bill passed in 2021, all registered voters in California will receive a mail-in-ballot, which can be returned by mail, at a drop-off location, or your county elections office.

Dates to Know

September 6, 2024 The official California voter information guide will be available online.

September 26, 2024 The official California voter information guide goes out in the mail.

October 7, 2024 Ballots start going out in the mail (delivery date varies from county to county).

October 8, 2024 Ballot drop-off locations open.

October 21, 2024 The registration deadline for the general election. Register to vote, pre-register, or check registration status here »

October 26, 2024 Vote Centers open in all Voter’s Choice Act counties.

November 5, 2024 The last day to vote in the 2024 California General Election.

What is my ballot status?
When do vote-by mail ballots need to be submitted?
Vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked on or before Election Day and received by your county elections office no later than 7 days after Election Day (November 5, 2024). If you are not sure your vote-by-mail ballot will arrive in time if mailed, bring it to any polling place in the state between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Election Day.

VOTING BY MAIL

1. Complete your ballot (check out our endorsements here), securely seal it in the official return envelope, then make sure to sign and date the official return envelope before submitting.

2. One option is to mail it to your county elections office. Find your county elections office here

3. Another option is to deliver it in person to any polling place in the state on Election Day,  November 5, 2024, between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Find a polling location near you here.

4. Lastly, if you are not able to personally drop off your ballot, you could authorize someone else to return your ballot on your behalf. (They cannot be paid on a per-ballot basis to submit your ballot. You will find said authorization on the outside of your official ballot envelope.)

VOTING IN PERSON

1. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 5, 2024. Find your polling location here.  

2. Voters in Voter’s Choice Act Counties have the opportunity to vote in person as early as 10 days prior to Election Day. Voters in these counties can also drop off ballots starting 28 days before Election Day.
