AB 1066:

Overtime protections for farmworkers

Author: Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez

AB 1066 (Gonzalez) corrects an historic injustice, removing the exemption in California’s employment code which has excluded farmworkers from basic overtime protections for decades.  Once implemented, it provides the same overtime protections for farmworkers as other hourly employees in California. CLCV’s mission is not simply to protect our natural landscapes, but to protect our everyday environment: the places where we live, work, and breathe.  Farmworkers face some of the most difficult working conditions in our state, from concentrated exposure to pesticides to long hours working under the sun with limited access to shade and water – conditions which continue to be worsened by climate change. California is the largest provider of produce in the nation. By extending overtime protections to farmworkers we help ensure those who feed us are better able to put food on their own tables, and provide an example for other states to follow.

About California Environmental Voters

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
