Healthy and Heat Resilient Homes

Extreme heat is one of the deadliest impacts of the climate crisis as heat waves worsen. While state law has long required that all renters must have the ability to heat their homes when outdoor temperatures are extremely cold, there is no similar standard to keep rental units cool when outdoor temperatures are extremely high. AB 2597 would have solved this by requiring all rental units be able to maintain safe indoor air temperature regardless of the temperature outside. Even though this bill failed to pass, the state budget allocated $5 million to require the Department of Housing and Community Development to implement the same policy by 2025.
